Many people are hesitant to plant tomatoes because they’re not familiar with the “do’s and don’ts” of tomato growing. They don’t understand how to grow tomatoes, and can’t find any detailed information to show them step by step. Luckily, growing tomatoes is quite easy if you have access to high quality instructions.

  • Start With “Where?”. Find the perfect place to plant your tomato seeds. Remember tomato plants like direct sunlight, so if possible, plant it in a sunny area of the garden.
  • Ventilation. Physical and root problems are usually caused by poor soil ventilation. If you run into poor ventilation problems, you can face a fan towards the plants for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Spacing and Staking. If you have a large area, you can grow several tomato plants at the same time, however, packing them all into a tight space is a real bad idea. Doing so restricts air flow, and can trigger disease outbreaks. It’s more likely that all plants could be affected even if just one plant gets the disease.
  • Fertilizers. If you want to have bigger and healthier tomato plants, you can use fertilizers. But be careful to not chemicals that are harmful to the environments or your family. It’s very important to research what’s inside the fertilizer product, as some contain chemicals that can harm the plant. Mulching is crucial in growing tomatoes, as it keeps your soil and plant healthy.
  • Avoid Diseases. It’s helpful to minimize over digging and hand weeding. Eventually you will notice that leaves appear about an inch from the bottom. These leaves meed to be plucked before the plant reaches three centimeters. Doing so helps prevent fungus and other infections.

  • Water Regularly. Make a plant watering schedule and be sure to stick to it. Carelessness in tomato watering may result in damage and/or a poor quality harvest. The instructions included in my favorite how to grow tomatoes guide, “Best Juicy Tomatoes” are simple and easy to follow. Be patient, follow the guide, and you will end up with a healthy tomato plant.

How to Grow Tomatoes Tips and Tricks

If you want to build your own garden, why not grow tomatoes? Tomatoes are delicious and provide several various vitamins your body needs.

Tomatoes can be used for making a simple salad, and also in complex recipes like spicy tomato salsa and spicy tomato soup. Another great part about growing your own tomatoes is that it only takes a few months to “see the fruits of your labor”… Ripe juicy tomatoes! :) This is one of the many reasons why people consider tomato growing a rewarding and satisfying hobby.

  • Soil Preparation. Soil is a crucial part of the process. Without soil, it would be impossible to grow tomatoes. Unlike other plants that require a specific kind of soil, tomatoes can grow in nearly any type. However, despite the fact they can grow in all  kinds of soil, there’s no guarantee your plants will be healthy. There are still a few soil preparations before the actual planting happens. Make sure that the soil contains organic materials. If the soil has less organic materials, you can add compost to it to make it more effective. Composting is the process of mixing household and yard organic waste in a bin or pile, and letting then decompose.
  • Increase Production. Consider spraying your tomatoes with tea extract or seaweed every so often. The first few times should be done when you first plant them. The next time is during the flowering season and lastly, when you see some tomatoes growing, spray it.
  • Pruning. Tomatoes need to be pruned so you get a “bumper crop”. This will make the plant yield bigger tomatoes in the future.
  • Harvesting. Don’t hesitate. When the tomatoes turn their color, prepare for harvesting. It’s easy to tell when tomatoes are ready to be picked, as they will fall off the plant without force.

Everyone wants to learn how to grow tomatoes, but only a few find tested and proven instructions to do so. You can grow the plants in pots or in your garden. Although growing tomatoes isn’t too difficult, there are still guidelines that you must follow in order to have a ripe, juicy tomato harvest.

In this article, I’m going to go over a few tips I learned when I first started growing organic tomatoes.

  • Placement. Tomato plants love sunlight and giving them direct sunlight is highly recommended. But what if you live in an area where the sun only shines 3 to 4 months out of the year? Does it mean that you shouldn’t plant tomatoes? Nevertheless, the answer is no. It doesn’t matter where you live as long as you plant the tomatoes strategically.
  • Timing. Only plant tomatoes when it’s warm outside. If you plant them in the winter, they will die and all your hard work will be worth nothing.

  • Spacing. Just like people who dislike crowded places, tomatoes also do. Who wants to be in a crowded place where you can’t move freely without touching someone? Tomatoes need adequate space to grow and move freely – the bigger the space, the better. If possible, there should be 24-30 inches distance in between the tomato plants.
  • Digging. Digging depends on where you plan on planting your tomatoes. If in the garden, you can dig 6 inches deep if the tomatoes you have are leggy. The leggy part will quickly produce roots. However, if you don’t have leggy tomatoes, then make a hole that’s twice the size of the root ball.
  • Planting. Plan on plating your tomatoes in a pot? You can transfer them later if  you like, make sure to water the plants until they soak in the moisture before removing. Then, in the hole that you dug earlier, put in fertilizer (optional), and water the plant thoroughly.

Learning how to grow tomatoes isn’t too hard if you consider these 5 tips. Not only will you have success, but also a very good harvest. You’re going to love eating the “fruits of your labor” after all the careful planning and hard work.
